Laid off, divorced and broke in Detroit, Stan Thompson heads for Phoenix to look for a job. Not being a detail man, he didn’t check the job market in Arizona before he left. Unable to find a job there, in desperation he purchased the bankrupt Deluxe UFO Tour Company, a business that provides tours of alleged UFO landing sites. Predictably, he also didn’t inquire about the details of the business nor the strange town of Empyrean, Arizona where he would move. Lots of tourists visit Empyrean because it claims it is the “Home of the Most UFO Landing Sites on Earth.” However, no one in town has ever actually seen a UFO.
Stan must not only deal with that obstacle, but also the very odd inhabitants of Empyrean, Arizona.

This little tale is supposed to be humor. The situations that were supposed to be funny were easilyrecognized, they just weren't. The main character was stupid, made stupid choices repeatedly
and was aware of each stupid choice as he was making it and could have extricated himself
from the situation. In fact, if he had tried and failed, that may have been funny. The story read
like the plot of a bad movie that is SUPPOSED to be bad. but is bad in a funny way.
The first stupid choices were forgivable because he made them out of a willingness to help others.
Many people have made rash, even stupid, choices out of a willingness to help others.
The story meandered along and I continued to read, hoping the story would at least act like it was going
to develop. But then I hit a section where he was berating himself and debating his "stupidity vs sanity"
and I had to stop. The string of "we""you""they""us" in each sentence got me dizzy.

If I told you anything about the story it would give something away. I'll just say I LAUGHED OUT LOUD many times while reading the book. I would read it and give it to my friends. My only regret is that I finished the book and there is no more to read.
A little like the Hitchhikers Guide series. It's a fun read and pretty quick. Basically the hero does everything just the opposite of any rational thinking person, so it's just the right thing. Regular rules don't apply here. Fun, silly and quick.
The book starts that way and then keeps getting better. I am inclined to believe that it is all true, as normal people just cannot make this stuff up. I sure would like to know if Yaks one thru six remained at the top of his death list, and if not, why?
You have been fasting, working out, cramming for one of life's finals. Then you come upon Deluxe UFO Tour Company and like a Cheeseburger & Fries or a single malt and a Sherman MCD you relax and enjoy the moment. While it may not go down in the classic's I had a blast just going for the ride. A main character that you WILL relate to and galaxy of of the quirks and bizarre that live in the place I hope to find the glorious town of Empyrean, Arizona. So do your self a very pleasant click. Mr Wharton has given us who struggle, toil, and dodge the falling ACME safes, a night to grin, giggle, and dare I say, Hope for us that need all of that and I just want more.
James Wharton has skillfully created an imaginative collection of characters in this entertaining book. His ability as a writer involves drawing the reader into their sometimes dysfunctional and bizarre lives in an extremely interesting manner. The satirical solution to a multitude of problems was a great ending. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book as a light hearted, humorous read. Fran
This book was fun to read. It started off with several depressing events but after a few pages Stan starts traveling from Detroit to Arizona and the hilarity ensues. It becomes a sort of 3 stooges vs Chinese eunuch vampire warriors and aliens who fly a kite. The characters are hilarious! This book is worth your time. I'm gonna look up other books by James Wharton. He's a good writer.
In one day Stan loses his job, his house is foreclosed upon and his ex-wife is abducted by aliens, much to the detriment of her lesbian lover.
Stan travels from Detroit to Empyrean, Arizona to find his ex-wife, (because he's just that kind of guy) and finds himself in the craziest town full of even crazier residents.
He buys the bankrupt Deluxe UFO Tour Company on the advice of a talking Chihuahua who is the Mayor of the town and with the help of elderly gunfighters and two lady sumo wrestlers he defeats an alien invasion consisting of ancient Chinese eunuch vampires and a horny Alien Starship Commander.
Now if this doesn't pique your interest, nothing will!
This is a funny and cynical book that takes potshots at our modern society. Couldn't put it down.
